Google to Launch Internet Glasses
Before the End of the Year?
.
Today, New York Times reports that Google may be set to release a pair of Internet glasses by the end of 2012.
The New York Times says that these are "glasses that will be able to stream information to the wearer’s eyeballs in real time."
According to Google employees, these glasses will cost between $250-600 and will be Android-based.
The navigation system is rumoured to use head tilting to scroll and click and the glasses have a low-resolution built-in camera that will be able to monitor the world in real time and give information about people, places, etc.
The glasses will also have a small screen that will sit a few inches from the wearer's eyes, and will include a 3G or 4G data connection, a motion sensor and a GPS sensor.
Personally, I have always dreamed of a device like this and am very excited to get my hands on a pair. However, as exciting as they sound, there are some ethical issues with these glasses. Firstly, these glasses are constantly recording video footage of everything and everyone around the use. Secondly, these glasses have a GPS chip, so potentially, the user can be tracked. These two particularities about the product pose a major concern for privacy. Not only will the user's privacy be breached, but the public around the user' privacy will also be breached.
Then comes the comes the social issue that there will be a digital divide created amongst users of the product and those that can not afford it. People that do use it will have a clear advantage in many aspects of life compared to non-users.
